The Monday walking group of the Huddersfield U3A at present walks weekly throughout the year and we usually walk between 10 and 12 miles.  Our walks programme lists the leader for each walk and it is up to the leader to decide where his/her walk starts and goes.  Most walks start within 45 minutes drive of Huddersfield, although some are further afield.  Occasionally walks will be longer than 12 miles but this fact is advertised well in advance.

The Group currently welcomes new members.  If you would like to learn more, please contact the group admin Steve Annakin via the contact us option at the foot of this page.

To join the group it’s necessary to be a member of Huddersfield U3A, who can be contacted at:

By way of background, the U3A Monday Walking Group was started back in 1991 by Cliff Barstow and Andrew Chadwick.  Having walked together with another group, they felt that there might be support among U3A members for longer full-day walks in and around Kirklees. The first enrolment session produced just two recruits but, undeterred, Cliff and Andrew pressed ahead and planned the initial series of walks on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month. Three people, led by Cliff, took part in the first walk, which followed the route of the Colne Valley Circular.

Over the years the Group has grown steadily and there are now well over twenty active members though typical numbers on anyone walk are in the mid-teens.  Since the Group has grown we now walk every Monday of each month apart from Bank Holidays.  From soon after the start, it was and still is, the policy to share walk leadership among group members, although members new to the group are not expected to lead straight away unless they already have experience of leading. If anyone wants some company in checking out a route before their walk, there will always be somebody willing to oblige.

The normal distance for the walks is 10 to 12 miles. The terrain varies considerably from quite flat to very hilly and we walk in all weathers so good footwear and clothing are essential and we carry food and drink with us. A lot of our walks, which are usually circular, are within West Yorkshire (Kirklees, Calderdale, Bradford and Wakefield) but, in the summer especially, we go further afield, for example to North and South Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Lancashire.

Wherever possible we car share to get to the start of our walks.  As far as fuel costs are concerned, passengers have not usually contributed – we aim to take it in turns to drive, although this is informal. If there is a car park charge, passenger(s) usually cover this.

At Christmas, we generally have a pub lunch sandwiched between two shorter walks (around six miles in the morning and four in the afternoon) and in June we usually plan an evening pub meal after a midsummer walk a little further away, sometimes with an overnight hotel stop.

We publish two walks programmes a year, Spring & Summer and Autumn & Winter. The published programme only includes the leader and his/her contact details with perhaps a general overview of the route.  Those planning to walk should contact the leader a day or two in advance to find out details of the walk, meeting point, time etc.  However, the option exists to publish advance details of the walk on this web site and most leaders take up this option.

Should you have any questions regarding our walking group please, leave your details as below. We will get back to you as soon as possible.
